Dining what to light and how to light it
The lighting must make the dining room beautiful and functional for a variety of uses. It should make people, the table setting, food and prized possessions look their best, as well as providing for other activities at the table or around the room.Example of Dining AreaAnother good example of Dining Area lighting
Focal Point
For the dining table, the main consideration is to enhanced the color and texture of the food and the complexions and apparel of the diners; creating a festive mood by highlighting the table setting. Suggested illuminance: 10-20 f.c.

Yes v. No

Accent lighting over the table must be kept well within the perimeter of the table.  Do not place downlights over the chairs as the beams from above will cast unpleasant shadows on people's faces and the heat can be uncomfortable.

General Lighting
Serves the need for flexible use of the room: buffet-dinner, cocktail party, clean-up. Suggested illuminance: 5-10 f.c.

General Dining Area lighting

Chandeliers should be proportioned to both the table and the room; a diameter of 24" - 34" will suit typical spaces. The diameter should not be larger then the width of the, less 12", nor smaller then one half the table width.

Accent Lighting
Brings featured objects or special areas to light: the painting, the sideboard, the flower arrangements. Suggested illuminance on the table 20-50 f.c.

Accent lighting in the Dining Area

When the chandelier has no central downlight, the table setting and centerpiece can be enhanced by accent lighting using recessed adjustable fixtures with narrow to medium spread beams, spaced and angled to avoid casting shadows. Reflections from glass-top tables, however, must be considered whenplacing and adjusting the fixtures.

Control
Use lighting controls to match the lighting to the activity: a dinner party, clean-up, breakfast the morning after. Use one-dimmer for  each layer of lighting. In a very large room a multi-scene push button control is particularly useful.

Example of proper side board lighting

At the sideboard, carving and serving tasks should be provided with plentiful shadow-free lighting, from the ceiling or the wall. Suggested illuminance: 30-50 f.c.
